Getting Grace – With Writer/Director/Actor Daniel Roebuck

Daniel Roebuck is one of Hollywood’s most familiar faces. Through the years I’ve watched him on many of my favorite classic tv shows like Matlock, Lois and Clark, Love Boat, King of Queens, Early Edition, Nash Bridges… The list goes on and on.  Now I can’t wait to watch him on the big screen.

Daniel wrote, directed, and starred in Getting Grace, a comedy about cancer. Sounds a little unusual, but we got the privilege of meeting with Daniel at NRB convention and talking with him about Getting Grace.

In Getting Grace, Roebuck portrays a small-town mortician whose world is rocked by a rambunctious teenaged girl dying of cancer, as she plans for her departure and impacts the lives of those who will survive her. Newcomer Madelyn Dundon plays the title character of Grace; Marsha Dietlen (LITTLE CHILDREN, NEWLYWEDS) plays Grace’s mother, Venus; Duane Whitaker (PULP FICTION, HALLOWEEN II) plays Reverend Osbourne, and Dana Ashbrook (TWIN PEAKS) plays the successful and handsome author who challenges Roebuck’s character (Bill) in a duel for the romantic attentions of the lovely Venus.

Getting Grace premiered in September at the Northeast Film Festival in Teaneck, New Jersey, where it won Best Feature, Best Director, Best Actress (Madelyn Dundon) and the Audience Choice awards. The film was also exhibited in competition in October at the Adirondack Film Festival, where it won the coveted ”Best of the Best” Audience Award.

The response to the movie so far has been that you’ll laugh, then you’ll cry, then you’ll laugh again. The reviews on IMDb are already raving about it, with each reviewer giving it a 10/10. In our interview, Daniel shares the inspiration behind the story and the movie title.

As  filmmaker, I love the approach that Mr. Roebuck is using with his movie. The official release date is March 23, but from March 4-17, he and his cast mates will be traveling to select theaters for red carpet sneak peek screenings. One of those screenings is in Nashville on March 16, and I can’t wait to attend. Other sneak peek theaters include Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Roanoke, Raleigh, Charlotte, and Atlanta, but hurry and check it out since the tour starts tomorrow!

Grace (Madelyn Dundon), a teenage girl dying of cancer, crashes a funeral home to find out what will happen to her after she dies, but ends up teaching the awkward funeral director, Bill Jankowski (Daniel Roebuck) how to celebrate life.
