I’m excited to introduce Steven Brown, one of our talented actors in the cast of SUMMER OF ’67. Steven and his wife  Dorothy have a blended family of 9 children and 14 grandchildren. Like many of our actors, he’s a Navy Veteran. He’s also a musician with a newly released album called MOMENTUM that you’ll want to check out.

Which came first, acting or singing?

Singing. I first began (like so many singers) in church. At the age of 13, I joined the church youth choir at the church my sisters and I attended. I didn’t know if I had any talent for singing at the time, but the youth/choir director saw something in me and asked me to sing solos and eventually with an eight-person chorale we named SALT  from 1977 to 1979.

My first foray into acting came at that same church, where we performed a play called THE CELL set in a first century Roman prison where Christians were being jailed, awaiting their turn in the Colosseum. An interesting side note about the cast – I was the youngest actor in the cast, but I played the oldest prisoner (with the help of a lot of stage makeup).

My first professional music-related job was in 1993 (after I got out of the Navy) at a small church in Clever, Missouri where I was hired as the Music & Youth Director. My first professional acting gig was in 2007 at the Mansion Theatre in Branson, Missouri, when I was cast in the “Broadway-Style” musical drama about the life, ministry, and passion of Jesus Christ, entitled THE PROMISE.

However, It wasn’t until 2014, after graduating the training program for acting, music and modeling with AMTC (Actors, Models and Talent for Christ) that I began working in film and TV. My first film was called THE TRUTH BEHIND THE CHORDS  where I played a British aristocrat only seen in a flashback/dream sequence.

Since that time I have portrayed 35+ roles in film, TV, theatre, commercials, voice-overs, industrials, etc.

Steven Brown - actor/singerWhat are some of the movies/tv shows you’ve been involved in?

My first nationally broadcast TV role was as “Vernon Nelson” in the Investigation Discovery show I’D KILL FOR YOU (produced by NBC/Universal) in 2014. Then in 2016, I landed my first lead role as “Dagon” (a homeless veteran with PTSD, raising a teenage son) in the short film, TANEYCOMO – (PTSD does not need to be the end of a soldier’s story)” And recently I shot an episode of MURDER COMES TO TOWN for the Investigation Discovery channel (Produced by Lusid Media) where I had a principal role as Detective Kirk McClenahan.

Tell us about your role in SUMMER OF ‘67.

The role of “Minister” was one of a small-town pastor delivering a sermon soon after they heard the news of the major fire aboard the USS Forestal (CV-59) in July of 1967.

Did your background in the Navy affect your decision to audition for SUMMER OF ‘67?Steven Brown in Summer of '67

Yes, I believe it did. As a Veteran, I like to be involved in projects that honor the military and bring to light some of the issues they face.

Although I did not join the Navy until 1980, I remember the Vietnam Era as a young boy watching Walter Cronkite on the news reports. I didn’t understand it all at the time (and probably still don’t), but I want to pay tribute to all those men and women who have served in the armed forces during wartime and peacetime.

Tell us about your latest album.

My latest of 6 musical albums is entitled MOMENTUM and as the name implies, it is my declaration that I continue to make forward movement toward being a better musician, songwriter, singer and person.

Momentum includes 7 songs (6 original and one cover) ranging from Jazz, Blues, Rock, Pop, Country and Gospel styles. You can hear short clips of each of these tracks and more at www.stevenbrown.org/discography.htm or stream/download full versions of all my music at www.reverbnation.com/stevenbrown or www.soundcloud.com/stevenhbrown

Have you been able to combine your acting and singing in any roles?

Yes, I have been involved in a few musical theatre productions such as THE PROMISE and OKLAHOMA. I always love it when I can combine my passion for music and acting.

What are your plans for the future?

To continue learning and growing as an actor, singer, musician, songwriter and person in order to bring encouragement, inspiration, hope, laughter and enlightenment to the human condition wherever and whenever I can.

I plan to be working consistently in the entertainment industry (music and acting) within the next 2 years.

Anything else?

I love to travel. I have been coast-to-coast in the US, and circumnavigated the earth while in the Navy and as a civilian. So far I have visited 46 of the 50 states and 24 countries around the world.
