When did you first discover a love for acting?

That happened in 1985 when I was in I’m Going to Order a Lion (my first dinner theater gig).  The food was great, but it was the experience of “being in the story” which got me hooked.

What led to the transition from stage acting to film acting?

I can still picture it.  Back around 2000 my middle son, Joshua, told me about an audition for Rage of Justice.  That was my first film.

What’s the greatest challenge for a stage actor going into film acting?

That’s easy.  The greatest challenge is to not overact!  I think most stage-to-film actors would agree that it’s a weird, recurring lesson.

What do you think is your greatest strength as an actor?

It seems to be the ability to easily and comfortably get into character.  Quite a few people have encouraged me with comments about that.

How do you prepare for your roles?

It’s how I memorize my lines – a rather complex way.  Without fail I find different emotions, mannerisms, inflections, etc. come to life during those times until the “YES!” occurs.

What advice would you offer to aspiring actors?

Several very important things to keep in mind:

  • Stay close to Jesus – seriously!  Draw near to Him, and He’ll draw near to you.
  • Get on set a lot.  You can learn a whole bunch during those times, even when you’re an extra.
  • Listen to advice.  Some will be very helpful, but don’t believe everything you hear.
  • Keep a good attitude.  Remember that it’s not all about you.
  • Beware of temptations.  In victory or defeat, be honest with God; you’re not going to fool Him:-)lets-talk-film

Tell us about your new show Let’s Talk Film.

Let’s Talk Film is a relatively new series.  It began because I was asked to get some “hosting” experience to be considered for a TV show.  A thought then came to mind, and I asked Daniel Knudsen (Crystal Creek Media) if he would like an interview about Lifestone Velocity – since it was in postproduction.  Daniel, Kristina Kaylen, and Vickie Lynn Smith were kind enough to let me interview them (and Life Church of Canton, Michigan, graciously allowed us to record there).  That ended up as a 20+ minute interview and became the first finished project for Let’s Talk Film.  I hope to finalize the second one (A Horse Called Bear) in the near future.  I’ve also been in discussions with other productions regarding more interviews.
