Emily Knapp – Young Actress

Emily Knapp had a small role in The Good Book, but she blew us away with her portrayal of a young girl reaching out to a homeless woman. In  Providence she plays the youngest version of the main character and does a fabulous job showing a range of emotion from  happy-go-lucky innocence to devestated loss and loneliness. She’s a talented young lady with a great future ahead.

When did you first develop an interest in acting?
I first developed an interest in acting when I was scouted to participate in Actors, Models, and Talent for Christ (AMTC). After attending and placing in the top 3, my mom and I spent a summer in NYC, where I booked my first paid job in a Wal-Mart ad, featured in Better Homes and Gardens and Parents Magazine (October 2009).

What led to your interest in film acting?
When I had the opportunity to be a featured extra in The Good Book I caught the bug for doing film work instead of just print or commercials. I found it very different than print, which is live, but they are looking for just that “shot”. With commercials, it takes time to get what they want, but you are not really telling a long story. Filming is fun because you get to take on a character, develop their mannerisms, and then when you see the entire picture it is amazing to see it come together.

What films have you been involved in?
I have been in The Good Book and Providence. I was a featured extra in The Good Book and was blessed to be chosen as a lead, playing Young Rachel, in Providence. Over the summer I also played the lead role in a kid-friendly short film about Dracula, with hopes for a web release in 2016.

Tell us about your role in Providence.
Since I played the youngest Rachel, I had to show how she goes through several different emotions. She starts out dealing with two very opposite sides of parenting – being left out and ignored by her parents, yet having a loving relationship with her Grandma Rose, who is also teaching her about God and the Bible. Then she has to go through grief and a great feeling of loss when her Grandma Rose dies. I also had to come up with unique quirks that Rachel has throughout her life, that could be shown in each version of her.

What was it like sharing a role with two actresses?
It was hard, to be honest. We all had to tell each other if we wanted to add something unique about Rachel that she does around certain people. Also, we never had a chance to meet in person while filming (another neat thing about film vs. commercials or print). So other than pictures, I had no idea who the teenager and adult versions were. When we finally had a chance to meet at the premier in Nashville, it was amazing. Not only did we all look alike, we color coordinated our outfits – without knowing it! Our personalities definitely were in sync and it showed.

What are some of the commercials you have been in?
My most recent commercial is from Long John Silvers. So far I have been in multiple commercials for Long John Silvers that will start airing after the New Year. I am also in a commercial for Jefferson County Teachers Association, Holiday World, and Norton Hospital, (all currently airing locally). Holiday World was by far the most fun, since I got to ride their newest roller coaster, the Thunderbird, so many times.

What do you do when you’re not on a film set?
I’m involved in two cheers teams that are both competitive, so they both take up a good amount of my time. One is the high school team, even though I’m only in 7th grade. The other is an all-star prep team. Work for my age tends to slow down in this area over the winter months, so it’s a good balance between my cheer (which picks up now) and my acting. Come spring, my focus will go back to acting. I also like to keep my grades at an A/B average, (I prefer A’s), and I get a lot of homework, so I do a lot of that in the car!

 Anything else?

I just wanted to say thank you to the Wilharm’s for giving me my first chance with the role in The Good Book. I never imagined that making this connection would lead to such a great family, environment, and experience. I know God has many things on the horizon for them and am excited to see what is in store. It is also a great and amazing thing to meet so many actors and actresses that believe in their work and their message. I look forward to learning from all of them!
