T.J. Kirby – Songwriter

T.J, Kirby is one of the songwriters whose music is featured in the Providence movie soundtrack. He’s been involved in the music industry for over half a century.

When did you first develop an interest in songwriting?
I wrote my first song in 1966 at the age of fourteen.

What was the first song you wrote?
The song was titled “Troubled World” and my mother Lois paid $20 a month for a few months for a demo of the song through a mail order company out of Boston.

How did you get your start in the music industry?
When I was five years old my parents gave me a guitar for Christmas and I would bang on it and sing to my 45 records of Elvis, The Everly Brothers, Ricky Nelson, and Fats Domino. so my love of music really began at a tender age. Since then my love and interest for songs and artists is how my journey began in the music industry.

How long have you been working in the music industry?
I have been working and developing my knowledge of songs and writing for fifty eight years and I’m not through yet, praise God.

What films have you had songs in?
I had a song I co-wrote with Lanny Smith titled “Believin In Your Love” featured in the movie Hopefully Tomorrow starring teen idol Tommy Roe.(Dizzy, Sweet Pea).

Tell us about the two songs you have in Providence?
Very excited the way God is giving us all his blessings for this movie and I thank God I have two songs in Providence. They are titled “Coming Down With Something” and “Stop Let’s Go”. Coming Down With Something is co-written with Brandon Maddox and sung by Australian artist Kris Cummins. It’s a country song that has a George Strait feel. Stop Let’s Go is a retro sounding R&B song that I co-wrote with Melanie Blinn. It has a groove right out of the late 60’s.

What Are Your Career Goals?
I want to be the best songwriter and person that God wants me to be. I hope to have more songs in movies and more songs cut by artists. I would love to have a number one record and win a Grammy someday, but excited to wait and see what God has in store for my music career and life. I want to thank the lady in my life, my wife Rene’, because she is my rock, Between God and Rene’, I am one lucky man. Amen!
