I’ve discovered that while many filmmakers have embraced social media, most have yet to discover and take advantage of all that is available. Facebook, twitter, and pinterest are the most popular, with facebook definitely being the most useful for filmmakers.
Generally, filmmakers use facebook primarily to solicit followers or funds. Which is fine, I guess, but can be a fruitless endeavor. Just asking people to “like” your page doesn’t contribute much to your project. And even if you do crazy promotions and rack up fans, it doesn’t necessarily translate into anything profitable. It’s great to have a solid fanbase and if you can do it without looking desperate, excellent! The best way to develop fans is just to have a product that people like and want to share with their friends.
A lesser known use of facebook is facebook groups. These are ideal places to network with other professionals and to learn from them. Each of them has a different focus and a different benefit. Some are big with active postings about movie projects going on. Others are small and more personal with filmmakers sharing and encouraging each other. Many are in between.
Here are a few of the more popular facebook groups of interest to Christian filmmakers. If you know of others, please share them in the comments section.
